In this weeks media round-up we have a bunch of articles to share which push back against weight-loss resolutions, and a mini-rant about news sources advertising weight loss products under the guise of 'news' ARGH!


1. From Kristina Bruce:

“The BMI chart was developed by mathematician, astronomer and statistician. NOT a doctor. Not anyone in the health field. By a dude who liked math and applied it to study human physical characteristics and social aptitudes. So there's that.”


2. From Michelle Vina-Baltsas via Medium:

“I want to be very clear about something. If you are looking to make 2018 the year where you finally end chronic yo-yo dieting, joining Weight Watchers or any other weight loss program will not help you achieve that goal.”


3. From me as I've finally joined the rest of the world on Instagram (!):

"Stereotyping due to body weight harms everyone. Be better. Question the validity of the things you believe about larger people. Understand that you will always project your own fat phobic fears onto others if your sh!t remains unexamined. Listen to your fellow human beings. #please"


4. Rant: News organisations who mix journalism with advertising meet research organisations which mix research with commercial enterprise = a whole lot of misrepresentation to the public.

Notice the advertorial label? No, me either.

This is clearly an advertorial piece and should be have disclaimer saying that and that THESE RESULTS ARE NOT TYPICAL. CSIRO are no better than wellness gurus making misleading claims about their weight loss plans!

A research organisation selling a product by giving the impression that massive weight loss is feasible and achievable for most consumers is tantamount to research misconduct.
